Singapore Teachers’ Union

Protecting and Promoting, Teachers and Teaching since 1946

Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education, delivered a welcome address at the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) 2024, which took place from 22 to 24 Apr. He spoke about fundamental shifts that will shape education in the coming years, and how Singapore sees the need for us to go beyond conventional benchmarks of success for education. Mr Chan also shared that the quality of the teaching force is the most important determinant of our education system, and we must continue to treasure and respect our teachers as a society in order to attract, retain, and grow the teaching profession. “We must continue to value our teachers, and look after them well, so that in turn, they will look after our students well,” he said.

The International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) brings together education ministers, union leaders and other teacher leaders from high-performing and rapidly improving education systems to identify best practices and engage in open conversations on how best to strengthen the teaching profession and raise student achievement. The plenary sessions in the summits address the themes agreed by the ISTP host country, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Education International (EI). They have covered all aspects of teacher policy and have included such topics as:

  • Using evaluation to improve teaching.
  • Developing high-quality teachers for the schools with the greatest needs.
  • Strengthening teachers’ confidence in their own abilities.
  • What policies can help teachers acquire the knowledge and skills they need?
  • Enabling pedagogies for the future.

A key outcome of each summit takes place during the final session, in which union leaders and ministers agree on objectives focused on one or more aspects of teacher policy for the coming year.

ISTP 2024 in Singapore:
Singapore is co-hosting the ISTP from 22 April 2024 to 24 April 2024, together with the OECD and EI. As the only EI affiliate in Singapore, STU will be involved in organising the ISTP together with the Ministry of Education.
The ISTP Pre-Summit 2024 organised by STU has been scheduled to be held on Sunday, 21 April 2024. It serves as a platform for EI to brief all the union delegates on the proceedings of the summit.
