Kicking off STU’s inaugural Futsal Competition 2018

Singapore Teachers’ Union (STU) organised its first ever Inter School Futsal Competition 2018 on Saturday, 18th August 2018. Teams from 11 schools came to The Ark futsal pitch at Orchid Country Club to battle it out for the title. It was great to see school principals and their teachers come together to play on a Saturday morning, strengthening their own school spirit. The event also served as a platform for teachers from the different schools to network and make new friends. The group phase of the tournament kicked off at 9am and the scorching heat did n  ot dampen the mood or spirit of the players as they competed with much gusto.

The knockout phase of the tournament was a closely fought one and in the end there could only be one winner. Arise Boonlayians, the team from Boon Lay Secondary School, proved to be worthy winners as they beat Marsiling Boys, the team from Marsling Secondary School, who finished Runners-Up.

We also had an Invitational Inter Union Futsal tournament taking place simultaneously with the Inter School tournament. Teams from STU, Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers’ Union (SMMWU), Amalgamated Union of Public Employees (AUPE) and United Workers of Electronics and Electrical Industries (UWEEI) participated in this event. The event allowed members from the different unions to come together and get to know each other better. The teams played with much energy that defied some of their age. In the end, the team from SMMWU proved too strong as they won all their matches to finish as Champions. They were closely followed by the team from STU who finished Runners-Up.

This exciting tournament came to a close at 3pm and our Guest of Honour, Mr Shamsul Kamar, Cluster Lead of the Education Cluster, NTUC gave away the prizes to the top four teams of each category.
